Kailua Kona, Hawaii is one of the top fishing destinations in the Pacific Ocean. Surrounded by mountains and protecting it from the winds, most days the sea conditions are more like that of a lake. With deep waters (over 3,000 feet) only a couple of miles from shore, there are a variety of different species of fish to be caught around Kona.
Several different species of billfish roam Kona waters, making offshore fishing the highlight of any trip. Striped Marlin are around most of the year, but the best time is during the winter. The elusive Spearfish are best during February through April. During April and May there are many Black Markin caught and during the summer lots of Blue Marlin are around.
Besides billfish, Kona has good Tuna fishing with aggressive Big Eye, Yellowfin, and Skipjack Tuna. There are also good catches of Mahi-mahi and Ono (Wahoo). Reef fishing will produce many different species of Grouper and Snapper, but also Amberjack, Giant Trevally, and Sharks.
