Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Marco Island is the largest island in Ten Thousands Islands, which is an island chain. It serves as a barrier island of the Gulf of Mexico. Marco Island has a rich history of fishing that dates back thousands of years. The Calusa Indians, who inhabited the region between 500 and 1500 AD, were known for their impressive fishing skills and used nets and spears to catch fish in the surrounding waters. Spanish explorers landed on the island in the mid-1500s and named it La Isla de San Marcos.
In the 1800s, Marco Island was a popular destination for sportsmen and commercial fishermen alike. The abundant waters surrounding the island were home to a variety of fish, including Tarpon, Snook, Redfish (Red Drum), and Grouper. Fishing was an important industry on Marco Island and helped support the local economy. In the early 1900s, fishing tournaments became popular on Marco Island, attracting anglers from all over the world. In 1923, the first Tarpon Tournament was held on the island, and it has since become an annual event that draws thousands of visitors each year. During the 1950s and 1960s, the construction of the Tamiami Trail and the development of the Everglades led to an increase in tourism on Marco Island. Fishing charters and guides became a popular way for visitors to experience the island's abundant fishing opportunities.
Today, Marco Island is still a popular destination for anglers of all levels. The inshore waters surrounding the island are home to a variety of fish, including Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, and Sea trout. With ample ledges, reefs, and wrecks nearshore and offshore, Marco Island provides some of the best grouper and snapper fishing. Gag Grouper and Red Grouper are a couple of species that are popular. A record 538 pound Goliath Grouper was caught around Marco Island. Cubera Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Red Snapper, and Vermillion Snapper are just a few of the many species you might catch while bottom fishing around Marco Island.
Barracuda and King Mackerel are not the only toothy critters found on many of the reefs and shipwrecks around Marco Island, a record Tiger Shark weighing 1,065 pounds was caught while offshore fishing. Blackfin Tuna, Mahi-mahi (Dolphinfish), Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna are some of the species of fish you might catch while trolling offshore. Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, and White Marlin are some of the billfish you might encounter on trips to the deep.
