Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Historically, Ocracoke, North Carolina, is best known for being the home of the infamous pirate Blackbeard. Ocracoke is part of North Carolina's Outer Banks. This means that Ocracoke is located on an island, poised between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound. The city of Ocracoke is nestled by a harbor known as Silver Lake. With so much ready access to the water, it is no wonder that Ocracoke fishing is noteworthy.
The most popular Ocracoke fishing happens off the coast in the waters of the Atlantic. Ocracoke is positioned ideally for the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a warm current that moves along the coast. Many fish are drawn to the Gulf Stream. In Ocracoke, Gulf Stream fishing can be especially bountiful. You have the chance to reel in some impressive Billfish. This includes Blue Marlin and White Marlin. You could even catch Sailfish, Mahi-mahi and Wahoo. The NC state record Wahoo was caught off Ocracoke and weighed 150 pounds. During the winter, these waters are also inhabited by species like Bluefin Tuna and King Mackerel.
The Gulf Stream is definitely popular for Ocracoke fishing, but it is not the only option. The waters near Ocracoke offer bottom fishing. You can find many popular fishing spots with local reefs and shipwrecks along the continental shelf. If you feel like trying bottom fishing, Ocracoke might yield Amberjack, Gray Triggerfish and Black Sea Bass. Other common catches include Gag, Red, and Snowy Grouper and many different species of Snapper.
Some people like to fish closer to shore. When choosing surf fishing in Ocracoke, you can enjoy the flourishing populations of Flounder, Red Drum, Speckled Trout and Bluefish. The fishing in the area is so good that many record-breaking fish have been caught in these waters. Another 2 NC state records for King Mackerel weighing 82 pounds and a Spanish Mackerel weighing 13 pounds were caught in Ocracoke waters, proving this is one of the best places to fish on the east coast.
