Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a religious dissenter who sought refuge from persecution in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams named the area "Providence" as he believed that God had provided him with a safe haven. Fishing has played an important role in the history of Providence, Rhode Island since its founding in the 17th century. With a location at the head of Narragansett Bay provided access to abundant seafood, including cod, haddock, flounder, and shellfish, which were an important source of food and trade.
In the 19th century, Providence became a major center of the fishing industry, with its harbor serving as a hub for the processing, preservation, and distribution of fish caught in the waters of the North Atlantic. During this time, many immigrants from Portugal, Italy, and other countries came to Providence to work in the fishing industry, and their influence can still be seen in the culture and cuisine today. As the fishing industry declined in the mid-20th century, many of the fishing families turned to other industries such as jewelry manufacturing. Despite this decline, fishing remains an important part of Providence history and identity, and the city continues to have a thriving seafood industry that supports local restaurants and markets. Today, Providence is the capital and largest city of Rhode Island, known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and vibrant arts scene.
There are many types of fish you can catch from inshore Providence fishing, including Bluefish, Croaker, Flounder, and Striped Bass. Nearshore fishing trips could produce Bluefin Tuna, Black Sea Bass, Mackerel, or Tautog. Fishing offshore of Providence can produce Cod, Haddock, and Pollock on bottom, and further off in the deep you can catch Barrelfish, Blueline Tilefish, Golden Tilefish, Swordfish, and Wreckfish. Trolling offshore in the warmer months one might catch Dolphinfish (Mahi-mahi), Wahoo, White Marlin, and Yellowfin Tuna.
